Trieste, located between the Adriatic coast and Slovenia’s border is the capital city of the Friuli Venezia Giulia region in northeast Italy.
We take you to explore the city itself and this incredible region of Friuli Venezia Giulia!
Full of charm and poetry, home to countless poets and writers, Trieste brings with it the harsh and barren characteristics of the Karst land and the sweet calm of the sea embraced by its rocky coastline. A region where many differences live side by side, gathered in a narrow territory between the Alps and the Adriatic sea.
In such a setting the concept of multiculturalism and coexistence between a variety of so many different people, arriving from land and sea, was born thanks to an economic dream and the great vision of the Austrian Empire. Above all with Maria Theresa, built the Port of Trieste granting it the status of “porto franco” in 1719 with unique privileges in the world that still exist today.
Astonishing symbols of Trieste multiculturalism are the Serbian-Orthodox, the Greek-Orthodox, the Evangelical, the Methodist and the Valencian churches, one of the largest synagogue in Europe, bearing witness of tens of communities that have been part of the history of this city above the boarders.
